After some close-fought matches throughout the summer, the Club Championships culminates with Finals Day. Come and watch some great tennis, support your friends and relax with some drinks (BYO) and buffet food.

The first match, the Mens Singles Final, will begin at 11am, followed by the Ladies Singles, Mens Doubles, Ladies Doubles and culminating with the Mixed Doubles. For the first time this year, we have arranged through the LTA to have a qualified Umpire in the chair for all 5 matches!

There will be a barbecue during the afternoon, £5 or bring a food donation (sweet or savoury!) BYO drinks. If you fancy playing a social set as well as watching, social tennis will be available on courts 4 & 5 but please note that courts 1–3 will not be available for play during the finals.

We hope you can join us for what is always a tennis and social highlight of the Club calendar.

Our latest newsletter went out to all current Senior and older Junior members via email last Friday with details of some upcoming events, including a Ladies Tennis Evening, Coach-led Social on 1st May and information on how to sign up for our Club Championships and Singles Box league. If you are a member but did not receive it, please check your spam folder and that your membership was successfully renewed in ClubSpark.

Other dates for your diary include the Junior Club Championships on Saturday 12th June (so no Senior Social tennis that day), and Senior Finals Day on Saturday 4th September. We also hope to be able to run some of our regular events, for example American Tournaments, later in the summer.

This coming Saturday, 5th September, is the conclusion of the Club Championships. Normally the highlight of the Club's social calendar, we are unable to put on the usual barbecue and sumptuous buffet, but please do come along to support your fellow members and enjoy some fine tennis.

Play will begin at 1pm with the Ladies' Doubles Final, followed by the Men's Doubles and concluding with the Mixed Doubles. Volunteers for line judges are very welcome, this is a particular treat for the players being able to concentrate on playing and not call their own lines!

Please bring your own picnic food and drinks. Tea and coffee will be available but it will be served by a Committee member, there will be no access to the kitchen. Please also bring an umbrella in case of rain showers, there is limited space in the clubhouse for sheltering and priority will be given to players.

We ask that all attendees use the sign in/out sheets at the gate so we have a record for Test & Trace, and masks are recommended for spectators.

Entry for this event is now full!

We are excited to announce that we have teamed up with Gareth Clarke from socialtennis.co.uk to host our first-ever Grade 6 Singles Matchplay tournament on Sunday 19th January at 4pm. This event will be open to members and non-members with free entry for RPRLTC Senior Members.

Details of how members can enter were sent out via email. Entry is first-come-first-served so so enter soon to avoid disappointment!

Sheen Sports have kindly agreed to run a special Pop-up Pro Shop event at the Club on Monday 28th October from 4pm until about 9pm. This will be a great opportunity to try out some new tennis gear in the run up to Christmas. There will be demo racquets, sale clothing, shoes, and all sorts of accessories for example grips, strings, etc.

All the coaching sessions will running as normal, as well as a bonus Club Social Tennis session on two courts from 7pm. See you there!

Congratulations to our newly crowned club champions! We enjoyed many fine displays of tennis, accompanied by a delicious barbecue to sustain us through some long matches—four finals finished one set all, and had to be decided by a "Champions" tie-break, possibly a club record!

The first match set the tone for the day. At one-set apiece and 6-6 in the tie-break it could have gone either-way, but after 2 hours and 10 minutes Neville Attwood managed to find a way to edge past James Baybutt, 7-6 4-6 1-0 (6). The players and spectators enjoyed a qualified LTA Umpire in the Chair for this match, the parent of one of our Junior members, and something we will explore having for more matches next year.

For the second year in a row the Ladies Singles Final was Louise Field versus Lizanne Baldwin . Sadly for Lizanne she was unable to reverse last year's result and Louise retained the trophy with a 6-2 6-1 win.

The Gentlemen's Doubles was another epic match. After 24 games and 2 tie-breaks, the score was even so we were treated to our second match tie-break of the afternoon. Neville & Peter were the eventual victors over Simon & Warren, 6-7 7-6 1-0 (3).

After an overcast and breezy start to the day, the clouds cleared and the Ladies' Doubles Final was played in some beautiful late afternoon sunshine. The momentum swung back-and-forth in this match and eventually Kerry and Nicky triumphed over Liz and Steph, 6-3 2-6 1-0 (8).

Mixed Doubles Champions

After so many long matches and tie-breaks, it was necessary to call upon the floodlights for the last match of the day, the Mixed Doubles! This was a fascinating match, with Neville and James once again facing off across the net, while newly crowned Ladies Champions, Nicky and Kerry now found themselves opponents. Despite tired legs it was a thrilling conclusion to the day, with James and Nicky just edging it over Neville and Kerry, 6-2 2-6 1-0 (5).

Also, a huge thank you to everyone who helped with this event, from officiating finals and taking photographs to catering. Special thanks are due to Mike Smith who oversaw the draw throughout the summer, ensuring matches were played on time.

Entry for the Winter Doubles, including a Mixed Doubles Handicap, closes Friday 27th September so sign up in the clubhouse!

And in 2019:

  • Saturday 12th January & Saturday 2nd February: Coach-led Social.
  • Friday 22nd February: opt-in to the Wimbledon ballot closes.
  • Sunday 10th March: Annual General Meeting (AGM).
  • Saturday 7th September: Finals Day (with the Sunday as backup in the event of bad weather).

It was lovely to see so many Members and guests come and watch our annual Finals Day. All the players enjoyed the support of their friends and family, and our team of volunteers ensured everyone was sustained with a delicious barbecue.

The first event was the Ladies Singles, with Louise winning 6-2 6-1 against Lizanne. Thanks to our Junior Members Anna and Ella who were ball girls for this match.

Next up was an incredibly close fought match between Arunan and Neville. Neville took the first set 6-4, but then Arunan struck back 6-1 in the second to send it to a match tie-break. This was very even with Arunan winning by just two points, 10-8.

The Ladies Doubles (picture below) saw Lizanne and Louise face off across the net for the second time in the day. This time Lizanne and Handan were the 6-2 6-1 winners over Louise and her partner, Jo.

James and Warren were crowned the Mens Doubles champions while in the Mixed Doubles Lukasz and Steph beat Nathan and Martine 6-4 7-5 in another closely fought contest.

Congratulations to all! And don't forget to sign up for the Winter Doubles Tournaments in the club house for your chance at glory!

If you opted-in to the LTA Club ballot then come along on Sunday 29th April to find out if you have won the chance to buy some great tickets. You do not need to be present to win but those winners in attendance will have first choice of the available tickets. Other winners will be contacted via email afterwards. The first name will be drawn from the hat at 4pm, all are welcome, and the Club will be laying on refreshments to make the afternoon a properly social occasion.

At 2pm on the same day,  Senior Members are invited to play in a fun tournament. We will be using a new format called "Davis Cup" where two teams battle it out over the course of multiple matches. This format should provide an enjoyable afternoon for all standards of play, so please come along and have fun whether you are a relatively recent player who has never been to a Club Social, or someone who represents the Club in team matches.
