After some close-fought matches throughout the summer, the Club Championships culminates with Finals Day. Come and watch some great tennis, support your friends and relax with some drinks (BYO) and buffet food.
The first match, the Mens Singles Final, will begin at 11am, followed by the Ladies Singles, Mens Doubles, Ladies Doubles and culminating with the Mixed Doubles. For the first time this year, we have arranged through the LTA to have a qualified Umpire in the chair for all 5 matches!
There will be a barbecue during the afternoon, £5 or bring a food donation (sweet or savoury!) BYO drinks. If you fancy playing a social set as well as watching, social tennis will be available on courts 4 & 5 but please note that courts 1–3 will not be available for play during the finals.
We hope you can join us for what is always a tennis and social highlight of the Club calendar.
The Club has seen an unprecedented surge in new membership applications since the start of the summer, and recently had to implement a waiting list for adults to help manage the situation. We regret that the number of adults on the waiting list now exceeds the number of remaining memberships available and we are unlikely to be able to offer any further places until the start of the next club year in April.
We are working through the current waiting list on a weekly basis so if you have already been in touch with us then please do keep an eye on your email, and if you have been invited to participate in a free trial then please arrange that as soon as possible.
A quick reminder that there will be no Senior Club Sessions on Saturday 12th June due to the Junior Championships. All five courts have been booked for Social on Sunday 13th June in anticipation of greater than usual attendance.
Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic and prohibition on gatherings of more than 30 people, we ask that spectators for the Junior Championships be limited to family members of participants only.
We are very pleased to be running a new Tennis Xpress course for adults 6-7:30pm on Thursdays from 10th June. Open to members and non-members, Tennis Xpress is a beginner adult introductory coaching course for players who want to learn the basics of the sport. Designed as a nine-hour course over six weeks, Tennis Xpress is centred on the use of modified equipment such as slower bouncing green and orange balls to ensure that players quickly learn the game of tennis; being able to serve, rally and score by the end of the course. You can find more details and how to sign up here.
Now that we are in Step 3 Restrictions we feel that it is now safe to hold larger outdoor group activities such as American tournaments. The first one will be the upcoming Bank Holiday Monday, 31st May, from 2pm, finishing by 5pm. Due to the ongoing pandemic, advanced registration is required–sorry we cannot accommodate anyone who turns up on the day.
An American tournament is a fun way to play doubles with a variety of different partners and opponents over the course of an afternoon. Each player keeps their track of the number of individual games he or she has won in each set and the winner is the person who has won the most games at the end of the day. It is a great introduction to social tennis for newcomers to the club, or those improvers who want to try out their new skills at a club session. For regular club social players it is a fun alternative to the usual tennis format.
For details of how to enter, please see the Club's most recent email newsletter (20th May).
Our latest newsletter went out to all current Senior and older Junior members via email last Friday with details of some upcoming events, including a Ladies Tennis Evening, Coach-led Social on 1st May and information on how to sign up for our Club Championships and Singles Box league. If you are a member but did not receive it, please check your spam folder and that your membership was successfully renewed in ClubSpark.
Other dates for your diary include the Junior Club Championships on Saturday 12th June (so no Senior Social tennis that day), and Senior Finals Day on Saturday 4th September. We also hope to be able to run some of our regular events, for example American Tournaments, later in the summer.
Based on the roadmap for the gradual and staged easing of COVID-19 restrictions in England, we expect the club to re-open on Monday 29th March shortly after 8am. Our current understanding from the LTA is that singles and doubles social play, one-to-one coaching and formally organised activity for groups, including group coaching and club sessions will be able to resume for adult and children. Please refer to the LTA Coronavirus page for the latest updates, especially the summary activity grid.
The Committee and Coaching Team are currently preparing for the resumption of all permitted activities from 29th March. Court booking for 29th March will open at 8am on Sunday 21st March, following the normal court booking rules. We know everyone will be keen to get back on court so please be considerate when booking courts and give as many people as possible the chance to play.
Membership renewal emails will be issued following the AGM on Sunday 7th March, and applications for new memberships will open mid-March.
Following the Prime Minister's announcement tonight, the guidance published by the government requires all outdoor tennis courts to close from tonight. While outdoor exercise with one other person is permitted in public spaces, we are required to close the courts—the club gate will be locked tomorrow morning.
We look forward to welcoming everybody back to the club as soon as it is permitted.
